MEA Retirees Step Up to Lobby Against Anti-Strike Bills

MEA members responding to last week's call to action with phone calls and emails to legislators got some in-person back-up at the Capitol on Tuesday. A small but tenacious band of MEA retirees walked the halls of power to lobby lawmakers against legislation to punish Detroit teachers for recent sickouts.
The MEA-Retired group hand-delivered packets of information about Detroit Public Schools, including city inspection reports of wretched building conditions and color photographs showing mold-covered walls and ceilings, rodent droppings, water leaks, and general decay in numerous DPS buildings.
"We teach our kids to speak up if there is an injustice," said Jim Pearson, who retired five years ago from Highland Schools after 40 years of teaching. "These learning conditions are a serious injustice and need to be remedied." To read more click here.
