MEA-Retired Holds Annual Meeting in Lansing

Apr 05, 2016

MEA-Retired held their annual meeting on Tuesday, April 5th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lansing.  We had 190 registered delegates as well as several guests in attendance.

The keynote speaker at the meeting was Earl Wiman from Tennesse.  Mr. Wiman serves on the Executive NEA Board of Directors.  The nine-member executive committee is the governing body that oversees the 3.2 million-member NEA.  A former kindergarten teacher, principal and media specialist in Nashville, Tenn., Wiman is also a past president of the Tennessee Education Association (TEA). He was very informative at the same time very entertaining.  His main message was that retirees have to continue to fight for public schools, for public students, teachers, and the interest of retirees.

The three MEA Officers spoke to the audience and provided updates on the current issues that affect active MEA members.  Also, each of our health care providers addressed the audience and discussed key issues or changes that we will see in our health benefits.  The membership approved the 2017 MEA-Retired Budget.  Judy Foster was re-elected to a three year term as our President, Kay Walker was elected to a three year term as our Vice President, and Dan Rudd was also re-elected to a three year term as our Secretary/Treasurer.
